Understanding Childhood Immunization Schedules

A Pediatrician's Clinical Reference for Vaccine Timings and Managing Mild Side-Effects.

Why Vaccinations are Essential

Immunization is one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions available. By introducing weakened or inactive antigens into the body, vaccines train your child's immune system to identify and combat specific pathogens. This prevents severe, life-threatening viral and bacterial infections such as polio, diphtheria, measles, and tetanus.

At Cherish Children's Clinic, our schedules conform strictly to both the **National Immunization Schedule (NIS)** of India and the clinical suggestions of the **Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP)**.

Standard Vaccine Milestones (Birth to 1 Year)

  • At Birth: BCG (Tuberculosis protection), Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV-0), and Hepatitis B Birth Dose.
  • 6 Weeks, 10 Weeks, & 14 Weeks: Pentavalent Vaccine (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hep B, Hib), Rotavirus vaccine, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), and Fractional Inactivated Polio Vaccine (fIPV).
  • 6 Months & 7 Months: Annual Influenza (Flu) Shots (two doses spaced 4 weeks apart).
  • 9 Months: MMR-1 (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) or MR vaccine, and Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine.

Pediatrician Tips: Managing Mild Side Effects

It is normal for children to exhibit mild symptoms after a vaccination. This indicates their immune system is successfully reacting to the antigen. Common signs include low-grade fever, irritability, and slight swelling or redness at the injection site.

Clinical Care Guidelines:
  • Apply a clean, cool, damp cloth over the injection site to ease local soreness. Do not rub or massage the area.
  • Dress your child in loose, light clothing to prevent overheating during a mild fever.
  • Ensure plenty of hydration: increase breastfeeds or water intake depending on the child's age.
  • Never administer paracetamol or painkillers without checking the pediatrician-prescribed dose first. Dosage must be calculated strictly according to weight, not age.
